Sources: Former Texas WR Brenen Thompson to transfer to Oklahoma
After entering the transfer portal earlier this month after just one season at Texas, former four-star wide receiver Brenen Thompson is set to transfer to Oklahoma, he tells Rivals.
"It feels like home," Thompson told Rivals. "It’s somewhere I can strive to be great and be myself."
Thompson, who was also a prominent member of the Texas track and field program as a sprinter, saw action in nine games as a freshman last fall, recording one reception for 32 yards against Oklahoma State. He was also named to the Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll for the 2022 fall semester.
Thompson and his family took an official visit to Oklahoma this past weekend for the Sooners' spring game and now come out of the weekend with the incoming sophomore as the newest member of the program.
Oklahoma will welcome the speedster into Norman in an offseason where prominence at multiple wide receiver spots is still open for the taking. Thompson's versatility along the wide receiving corps will allow offensive coordinator Jeff Lebby to play with his flexibility in fall camp.
Thompson's three-phase history as a prep prospect will also allow Oklahoma to utilize him as a return specialist with his blazing speed and elite field vision.
Originally from Spearman, Texas located north of Amarillo in the panhandle of the Lone Star State, Thompson was rated as a four-star in the 2022 cycle because of his speed and production in the Texas 3A ranks as a junior that helped lead the Lynx into the third round of the playoffs. Early in Thompson's senior season, he was sidelined with an ankle injury that was expected to prematurely end his high school career, but he was able to return in the playoffs.
A star on the track as well during his high school career, Thompson owns personal bests of 10.22 in the 100-meter event and 20.73 in the 200-meter event. Thompson won three 3A track state championships in the open events as a prep prospect at Spearman.
A four-star prospect from the class of 2022, Thompson was ranked as the No. 144 recruit in the country, the No. 21 recruit from the state of Texas and the No. 23 wide receiver in the country. He was an Under Armour All-American recipient and all-state honoree as a junior.
