Transfer Tracker: Calzada stays in the SEC

Mark Pszonak contributed to this report.

The transfer portal never stops grinding. Texas A&M transfer quarterback Zach Calzada had plenty of options, but he chose to stay in the SEC when he committed to Auburn on Thursday.

Recruiting: After piling up approximately 40 offers, Calzada focused on Texas A&M, Georgia, North Carolina and NC State before committing to the Aggies during the spring after his junior season. He took a visit to College Station a few days before his decision.

At Texas A&M: Calzada played in three games as a true freshman, while maintaining his redshirt status, did not see the field in 2020 and then played in 12 games, including 10 starts, for in 2021. He completed 184-of-327 passing for 2,185 yards, 17 touchdowns and 9 interceptions.

Farrell’s Take: This one reminds me a bit of the Jack Miller to Florida commitment although Calzada has more on field experience. It's a puzzling decision on the part of Auburn to me and I don't blame Calzada for jumping at the chance to stay in the SEC West. But despite the win over Alabama, he struggled quite a bit in a starting role and I don't see this as an upgrade over Bo Nix. It's a middle of the road impact to me.

IMPACT METER

The Transfer Portal continues to change the way college football programs recruit and manage their rosters so we here at Rivals.com continue to evolve our coverage. Each time a player of note enters the portal, we will examine their potential impact on the college football landscape and assign an impact rating, both when they enter the portal and when they choose a destination. The scale is from 1-10 and the description below explains the scoring scale.

1.1-4.0 — Not a big impact expected, likely a non-starter and down the bench depth player.

4.1- 6.0 — A solid impact can be expected in the right scenario and has the potential to battle for a starting job.

6.1-9.0. — A high impact player who won’t change a program but will certainly be a very good contributor and starter.

9.1- 9.9 — A very high impact player who should start the moment he steps on the field and will change the outlook of a program immediately.

10 — A franchise transfer who has a chance to be an All American and one of the elite players in college football.
