Transfer Tracker: LSU DB hits the portal

Mark Pszonak contributed to this report.

The transfer portal never stops grinding. Known as one of the top defensive back programs in the country, LSU was excited about Dwight McGlothern's potential after his performance in 2021. On Tuesday everything changed when he officially entered the portal.

Recruiting: McGlothern trimmed his list of top schools down to LSU, Oregon, USC, Virginia Tech and Arkansas before committing to the Tigers during the All-American Bowl. LSU was also the first school to offer McGlothern.

At LSU: After seeing minimal playing time as a true freshman, McGlothern began to flourish in 2021 with 32 tackles, two tackles for a loss, one interception, one forced fumble and five pass breakups.

Potential landing spots: Expect some of the schools that missed out on McGlothern coming out of high school to be major players, especially USC and Arkansas. On top of that, home-state schools Texas A&M, Texas, TCU, Baylor and Houston will be involved, as well as Kentucky, Florida State, Ole Miss and Penn State.

Farrell’s Take: He's just starting to hit his stride so he will be a welcome addition to a Power Five program. Heading back to Texas may seem likely although Kentucky has had success with former LSU players as well. He brings size to the table and he's a solid tackler but he's really improved on his ability to play the ball in the air as well.

IMPACT METER

The Transfer Portal continues to change the way college football programs recruit and manage their rosters so we here at Rivals.com continue to evolve our coverage. Each time a player of note enters the portal, we will examine their potential impact on the college football landscape and assign an impact rating, both when they enter the portal and when they choose a destination. The scale is from 1-10 and the description below explains the scoring scale.

1.1-4.0 — Not a big impact expected, likely a non-starter and down the bench depth player.

4.1- 6.0 — A solid impact can be expected in the right scenario and has the potential to battle for a starting job.

6.1-9.0. — A high impact player who won’t change a program but will certainly be a very good contributor and starter.

9.1- 9.9 — A very high impact player who should start the moment he steps on the field and will change the outlook of a program immediately.

10 — A franchise transfer who has a chance to be an All American and one of the elite players in college football.
