Baylor quarterback Gerry Bohanon entered the NCAA transfer portal Wednesday afternoon. Bohanon will have two seasons of eligibility if he chooses to use his ‘COVID’ year.
Blake Shapen is set to be named Baylor’s QB1 for 2022.
Bohanon started 12-games for Baylor in 2021, including wins over Texas and Oklahoma, throwing for 2,200 yards, 18 touchdowns and seven interceptions. He also rushed for 323 yards and nine touchdowns.
A leg injury kept Bohanon out of the Big 12 championship but he returned to the starting lineup in Baylor's 21-7 victory over Ole Miss in the Allstate Sugar Bowl. The win was Baylor’s first New Year’s Day bowl win in more than 60 years.
“This is a significant loss but not catastrophic for Baylor,” said Kevin Lonnquist, publisher of SicEmSports.com. “Bohanon would have provided experience off the bench if Blake Shapen had been hurt or ineffective. He knows the offense. However, Baylor's program is at a point where expectations in 2022 are high - competing for another Big 12 championship and getting into the College Football Playoff discussion - and it needs a QB who can make plays and give this program the best chance to meet those expectations. Shapen offers that.”
