Florida landed one of the top-rated defensive linemen in the portal Sunday, receiving a commitment from Penn’s Joey Slackman. The Ivy League Defensive Player of the Year will have one season of eligibility remaining for the Gators.
Over nine games this season, Slackman recorded four sacks and 12 tackles for a loss. Over his three seasons with the Quakers, the 6-foot-4, 300-pound defender has 11 sacks and 25 stops for a loss.
Slackman was an important addition for Florida, especially after the Gators saw starting edge rusher Princely Umanmielen transfer to Ole Miss on Friday. Slackman ranks as the No. 12 player in the Rivals Transfer Tracker. He’s the third-highest-rated defensive lineman behind Umanmielen (No. 9 overall and) Walter Nolan, the top-rated player in the rankings.
