Fresh off of a national title, Ohio State transfer quarterback Devin Brown has signed with California, according to multiple reports.
Brown entered the transfer portal on Dec. 8, 2024, but stayed with the Buckeyes during their College Football Playoff run. Ohio State defeated Notre Dame by a final score of 34-23 on Monday night to win the 2024-2025 College Football Playoff National Championship.
He spent three seasons in Columbus under head coach Ryan Day. Brown will have two years of college eligibility left and will now play under Cal head coach Justin Wilcox, offensive coordinator/offensive line coach Mike Bloesch, passing game coordinator/quarterbacks coach Sterlin Gilbert and the rest of the Bears' staff.
During his time in Columbus, Brown served mostly as a reserve or backup quarterback for the Buckeyes. He backed up starter Will Howard during the 2024 campaign, backed up Kyle McCord during the 2023 season and was behind both McCord and starter C.J. Stroud during the 2022 season as a true freshman.
According to Pro Football Focus, Brown played 66 offensive snaps in 2024, He recorded an overall grade of 66.9. He completed 11 passes on 20 attempts (55%) for 114 yards and a touchdown.
In 15 career games played, Brown completed 27 out of his 48 passing attempts (56%) for 331 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. He also scored a rushing touchdown.
Brown enters a quarterbacks room at California that also features four-star true freshman Jaron Sagapolutele. While Sagapolutele originally signed with Oregon in December of 2024, he entered the transfer portal in January and signed with Cal. Sagapolutele was a longtime commit for the Bears from July 2024 to December of 2024 before flipping to the Ducks during the Early Signing Period. Now both Brown and Sagapolutele will compete at the quarterback position for California.
Brown was a four-star pro-style quarterback prospect out of Corner Canyon High School in Utah in the class of 2022. He ranked as the No. 1 player in the state of Utah, No. 4 player at his position and No. 37 overall in the nation in the cycle.

The winter college football transfer portal window is scheduled to open on Dec. 9, 2024 for 20 days. Additionally, players have a 30-day window to transfer when their head coach leaves. There is also a five-day window for players to transfer after their team has finished postseason play. A 10-day transfer window will open on April 16 as well.
