Head coach Bill Belichick continues to add to North Carolina's 2025 roster, as Florida transfer safety Gregory Smith III committed to the Tar Heels on Wednesday.

Smith visited Chapel Hill in late April before now pledging to UNC. He also visited Purdue and Miami (FL.). Smith entered the transfer portal last month with all four years of eligibility remaining.

He played one season with the Gators under head coach Billy Napier in 2024. Smith will now play under Belichick and his sons — defensive coordinator/linebackers coach Steve Belichick and defensive backs/safeties coach Brian Belichick — and the rest of the Tar Heels' staff.

In 2024, Smith appeared in five games for the Gators, including four regular season games and Florida's Gasparilla Bowl win over Tulane. Due to a rule change that went into effect for the 2024 campaign, postseason play no longer counts against a player's redshirt eligibility, which allowed Smith to still play in the bowl game and retain his redshirt despite playing four regular-season games.

Smith totaled five tackles and a pass deflection during the 2024 season. According to Pro Football Focus, Smith played 100 total defensive snaps, including 54 at the free safety position. He also saw limited action on special teams, recording seven snaps.

Per Pro Football Focus, the 6-foot-3, 211-pound Smith recorded an overall defensive grade of 64.1 and a coverage grade of 66.7 this past season.

As a recruit out of Sumner High School in Riverview, Florida, Smith was rated as a four-star safety prospect. He ranked as the No. 40 player at his position and No. 61 prospect in the state of Florida.
