LSU’s backfield took a hit Tuesday as backup running back John Emery Jr. entered his name in the transfer portal. The sixth-year senior will have one final season of eligibility at his next school.

Emery tore his ACL last November, limiting his season to seven games. Before going down with the injury, he ran for 121 yards and a touchdown on 23 attempts and caught three passes for 58 yards.

Over the past five years, Emery started five games over 37 appearances, rushing for a combined 1,062 yards and 14 touchdowns while averaging 5.0 yards per carry. He had 188 yards and four touchdowns on the ground during the Tigers’ undefeated season in 2019.

Emery, a St. Rose, Louisiana native, signed with LSU as the No. 36 overall player and No. 2 running back in the 2019 class.
