Old Dominion lands Dayton transfer RJ Blakney

Old Dominion added to its roster on Thursday, when Dayton Transfer RJ Blakney announced his commitment to the Monarchs. A 6-foot-6 wing from the Baltimore area, Blakney, appeared in 82 games, starting 58, for the Flyers in three seasons and will now close out his career in a new jersey.

His career averages of 6 PPG and 3 RPG give him something to build off of as a senior at ODU, but he’ll be expected to take a step forward in his new Sun Belt Conference home. Below, Blakney discusses his decision with Rivals.

ON WHY HE CHOSE OLD DOMINION

“One person that kinda helped my process go faster was probably [assistant coach] Jordan Brooks. I had a prior relationship with him because he coached me back when I was young in AAU for Team Durant. So that was big. He contacted me once I hit the portal, and we started talking from there.”

ON HIS ODU VISIT

“It was nice. It’s by the beach , so that’s cool. I saw the facilities. They were great … all that. Weight room and the gym were all nice. I just loved the visit. It was a good vibe. It was welcoming.”

ON HOW HE’LL FIT IN WITH THE MONARCHS

“They said they like my experience coming from a school that’s a good program. They like that I’ve already played under a good coach and that we won a lot. They like my experience with winning. They like that I can bring that experience with me”

ON HOW HE DESCRIBES HIS GAME

“I would say that I’m a dynamic player that does multiple things. I’m really good at a lot of different ways, so I bring that kind of value to a team. I’m a fun player to watch.”
