Rice hired Scott Abell as its new head coach in late November of 2024. Groen entered the transfer portal in January of 2025.
He will now play under head coach Lance Leipold, offensive coordinator Jim Zebrowski, co-offensive coordinator/tight ends coach Matt Lubick and the rest of the Jayhawks' staff.
Due to an undisclosed injury, Groen played in just four games in 2024, allowing him to take a redshirt. He caught 12 passes for 94 yards (7.8 yards per catch) on the campaign. According to Pro Football Focus, Groen played 155 offensive snaps this past season, and recorded an overall grade of 54.8. He also played 17 snaps on special teams.
Groen had a breakout campaign in 2023, recording 39 receptions for 383 yards (9.8 yards per catch) and three touchdowns. He ranked second amongst American Athletic Conference tight ends in receptions, third in yards and fifth in touchdowns that season.
In 2022, he amassed nine receptions for 79 yards (8.8 yards per catch).
In total, Groen played 29 games for the Owls. He recorded 60 receptions for 556 yards (9.3 yards per catch) and three touchdowns.
