SMU is continuing to strengthen its backfield through the transfer portal. Sunday, Texas A&M transfer L.J. Johnson became the latest back to commit to the Mustangs. He joins Miami back Jaylan Knighton, who announced his transfer to SMU earlier this month.

Johnson appeared in six games this season, carrying the ball 10 times for 39 yards and a pair of touchdowns. The 5-foot-10, 215-pound redshirt freshman is the No. 2 rated running back and No. 25 overall player in the Rivals Transfer Tracker. He was the No. 44 overall player and No. 2 running back in the 2021 class. Johnson has three years of eligibility remaining at SMU.

Last year, SMU added five-star running back Camar Wheaton from Alabama as well as three-star talent Velton Gardner from Kansas last offseason.
