Another notable SEC quarterback is entering the NCAA transfer portal as Texas A&M’s Max Johnson became the latest big name to enter his name in the database Sunday afternoon. The fourth-year redshirt sophomore enters as a graduate transfer and will have two more years of eligibility at his next school.
Over four seasons at LSU and Texas A&M, Johnson has completed 60.5% of his passes for 5,853 yards and 47 touchdowns with 12 interceptions. He completed 62.1 percent of his passes for 1,452 yards and 9 touchdowns with five interceptions over eight appearances, including five starts.
Johnson took over Texas A&M’s starting job this season after Conner Weigman suffered a season-ending foot injury in the Aggies’ Week 4 win over Auburn. After starting the next five games, Johnson suffered a rib injury against Ole Miss, causing him to miss the Aggies' last three games.
Johnson transferred to Texas A&M from LSU ahead of the 2022 season. He lost out to Haynes King for the starting job to begin last season but ended up starting three games over four appearances before breaking a bone in his throwing hand.
Johnson, the son of Super Bowl-winning quarterback Brad Johnson, originally signed with LSU as the No. 11 pro-style quarterback in the 2020 class.
Johnson is the second SEC quarterback with starting experience to announce his decision to transfer in recent days. Friday, Mississippi State quarterback Will Rogers confirmed reports that he plans to enter the transfer portal as well.
