Texas adds DT depth with former 5-star Travis Shaw

Former Rivals.com five-star nose tackle Travis Shaw will be trying to resurrect his career at Texas.

Shaw played his first three years at North Carolina and was a career backup in 37 games played. He collected 55 tackles, six tackles for loss, four passes defended and two forced fumbles in his three years.

The 6-foot-6, 330-pounder played in the bowl game against Connecticut and had four stops and a tackle for loss Dec. 28.

Shaw showed immense potential his first three years of high school at Greensboro (N.C.) Grimsley High. It led to him being ranked No. 15 in the country by Rivals.com in the class of 2022. He was also No. 1 in the state of North Carolina and No. 3 defensive tackle nationally.

Shaw’s senior year was marred by injuries, and he had 20 tackles, five tackles for loss and two forced fumbles in four games his senior year. He had helped Grimsley win the state title his junior year, and had 84 tackles, five sacks and 28 tackles for loss.

The foot injury led to to his weight gain, and he also had off the field issues, which led to him struggling at UNC his first two years. He had 29 tackles his first two years.

Shaw will be coached at Texas by defensive line coach Kenny Baker, who played and coached at Gardner-Webb in Boiling Springs, N.C.

The winter college football transfer portal window is scheduled to open on December 9th, 2024 for 20 days. Additionally, players have a 30-day window to transfer when their head coach leaves. There is also a five-day window for players to transfer after their team has finished postseason play. A 10-day transfer window will open on April 16th as well.
