Transfer Tracker: Caleb Williams pulls a stunner

Mark Pszonak contributed to this report.

The transfer portal never stops grinding. In a time when it is difficult to pull a transfer portal stunner, Oklahoma quarterback Caleb Williams did just that when he announced on Monday that he had decided to continue his collegiate career at a different program.

Recruiting: Williams took multiple visits to Oklahoma before committing to the Sooners during the spring after his junior season. Maryland and LSU were also in contention at the time of his decision and keep an eye on USC and UCLA as they have been rumored early.

At Oklahoma: Williams, who took over the starting job during the fourth game of the season against Texas, passed for 1,916 yards, 21 touchdowns and four interceptions with the Sooners. He also rushed for 442 yards and six touchdowns.

Potential landing spots: With most Power 5 programs already entrenched with existing quarterbacks, where will Williams end up? Georgia, Ole Miss, Auburn, Penn State, Miami, and Mississippi State are a few to watch. LSU will also take a shot, even though they have undergone a coaching change since Williams seriously considered them out of high school.

Farrell’s Take: Williams is as big as it gets out of the portal as he showed his five star ability in his freshman season at Oklahoma. He could come back but that seems unlikely but wherever he ends up he will start from day one. He reminded me of Tyrod Taylor out of high school but has more upside it appears. There are some west coast whispers early and he will clearly take his time.

Impact Meter: 10 out of 10.

IMPACT METER

The Transfer Portal continues to change the way college football programs recruit and manage their rosters so we here at Rivals.com continue to evolve our coverage. Each time a player of note enters the portal, we will examine their potential impact on the college football landscape and assign an impact rating, both when they enter the portal and when they choose a destination. The scale is from 1-10 and the description below explains the scoring scale.

1.1-4.0 — Not a big impact expected, likely a non-starter and down the bench depth player.

4.1- 6.0 — A solid impact can be expected in the right scenario and has the potential to battle for a starting job.

6.1-9.0. — A high impact player who won’t change a program but will certainly be a very good contributor and starter.

9.1- 9.9 — A very high impact player who should start the moment he steps on the field and will change the outlook of a program immediately.

10 — A franchise transfer who has a chance to be an All American and one of the elite players in college football.
