Transfer Tracker: Gabriel heads to the Pac-12

Mark Pszonak contributed to this report.

The transfer portal never stops grinding. Once he entered the transfer portal, interest was extensive for UCF quarterback Dillon Gabriel. One of the schools which was the most aggressive was UCLA, and that paid off on Thursday with a commitment.

Recruiting: Gabriel initially committed to Army, but then reopened his recruitment during his senior season. He then committed to UCF during the Early Signing Period, after taking official visits to UCF, USC and Georgia.

At UCF: Gabriel passed for 3,653 yards, 29 touchdowns and seven interceptions during his true freshman, 3,580 yards, 32 touchdowns and four interceptions in 2020 and then only played in four games this fall after a collarbone injury cut his season short. In total he passed for 8,0241 yards, 70 touchdowns and 14 touchdowns during his time at UCF.

Farrell’s Take: Gabriel has shown his ability at the Group of Five level and there's no reason to think he wouldn't be successful for a Power Five team. The obvious connections to Tennessee were there and that would have been a great home for him but honestly so many quarterbacks in the portal have mentioned wanting to play for Chip Kelly and the UCLA situation it's remarkable. He should recover fully from his injury and is extremely valuable and experienced.

IMPACT METER

The Transfer Portal continues to change the way college football programs recruit and manage their rosters so we here at Rivals.com continue to evolve our coverage. Each time a player of note enters the portal, we will examine their potential impact on the college football landscape and assign an impact rating, both when they enter the portal and when they choose a destination. The scale is from 1-10 and the description below explains the scoring scale.

1.1-4.0 — Not a big impact expected, likely a non-starter and down the bench depth player.

4.1- 6.0 — A solid impact can be expected in the right scenario and has the potential to battle for a starting job.

6.1-9.0. — A high impact player who won’t change a program but will certainly be a very good contributor and starter.

9.1- 9.9 — A very high impact player who should start the moment he steps on the field and will change the outlook of a program immediately.

10 — A franchise transfer who has a chance to be an All American and one of the elite players in college football.
