Transfer Tracker: Khari Coleman enters the portal

Mark Pszonak contributed to this report.

The transfer portal never stops grinding. TCU defensive end Khari Coleman, who was the Co-Defensive Freshman of the Year in 2020, entered the portal on Tuesday, with two schools quickly jumping to the forefront in his chase.

Recruiting: Coleman initially committed to Kansas, but then flipped to TCU during the early National Signing Day. After he committed to the Jayhawks, the Horned Frogs’ staff had gradually ramped up their level of interest, which eventually led to the flip.

At TCU: Coleman finished his true freshman season with 33 tackles, 15 tackles for loss, which was seventh nationally, and three sacks during nine starts. In 2021, after missing the first three games due to an injury, he played in nine games, started four, while totaling 19 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, and 1.5 sacks.

Potential landing spots: Texas and LSU were two schools that immediately leapt to the forefront. The Longhorns recently hired ex-TCU coach Gary Patterson as a special assistant, while the idea of playing closer to home should bring the Tigers into the picture. A few other schools to keep an eye on include Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Texas Tech, Colorado, Kansas and UTSA.

Farrell’s Take: Coleman has proven he can get in the backfield and cause problems so he has been very well received in the portal since his arrival. Pass rushers are always needed and his connection with Gary Patterson could be important here although LSU is always tough to beat for home state kids. When healthy he's as dominant as they come.

IMPACT METER

The Transfer Portal continues to change the way college football programs recruit and manage their rosters so we here at Rivals.com continue to evolve our coverage. Each time a player of note enters the portal, we will examine their potential impact on the college football landscape and assign an impact rating, both when they enter the portal and when they choose a destination. The scale is from 1-10 and the description below explains the scoring scale.

1.1-4.0 — Not a big impact expected, likely a non-starter and down the bench depth player.

4.1- 6.0 — A solid impact can be expected in the right scenario and has the potential to battle for a starting job.

6.1-9.0. — A high impact player who won’t change a program but will certainly be a very good contributor and starter.

9.1- 9.9 — A very high impact player who should start the moment he steps on the field and will change the outlook of a program immediately.

10 — A franchise transfer who has a chance to be an All American and one of the elite players in college football.
