Transfer Tracker: Major Burns decides to go home

Mark Pszonak contributed to this report.

The transfer portal never stops grinding. Once he entered the portal, the assumption was that Georgia transfer defensive back Major Burns would head to LSU to play close to home. After waiting almost two weeks, it finally became a reality this week.

Recruiting: Burns was initially a Texas A&M commit, then committed to LSU after reopening his process. However, a couple of weeks before the early Signing Day he reopened his process again and committed to Georgia after taking a last minute official visit.

At Georgia: Burns played in six games during his true freshman season in Athens, totaling five tackles. He was an early enrollee and saw all of his time as a backup and on special teams.

Farrell’s Take: Burns has length and talent and he was a 4 star out of high school for a reason but he was inconsistent with his tools which is why he was outside the Rivals250. He's a high ceiling guy because of that length and frame but he will make some head scratching plays as well in a bad way. That being said, he's going to be happy to be back home and he fills a huge need at safety for the Tigers. And he will get elite coaching and be pushed by some serious talent and experience from the corner position in Elias Ricks and Derek Stingley Jr. He's a safety all the way but having those guys outside will help.

IMPACT METER

The Transfer Portal continues to change the way college football programs recruit and manage their rosters so we here at Rivals.com continue to evolve our coverage. Each time a player of note enters the portal, we will examine their potential impact on the college football landscape and assign an impact rating, both when they enter the portal and when they choose a destination. The scale is from 1-10 and the description below explains the scoring scale.

1.1-4.0 — Not a big impact expected, likely a non-starter and down the bench depth player.

4.1- 6.0 — A solid impact can be expected in the right scenario and has the potential to battle for a starting job.

6.1-9.0. — A high impact player who won’t change a program but will certainly be a very good contributor and starter.

9.1- 9.9 — A very high impact player who should start the moment he steps on the field and will change the outlook of a program immediately.

10 — A franchise transfer who has a chance to be an All American and one of the elite players in college football.
