Texas A&M’s depleted secondary received a big boost Thursday as the Aggies received a commitment from North Carolina transfer Tony Grimes. The junior cornerback is rated as the No. 13 overall player and No. 4 defensive back in the Rivals Transfer Tracker. He will have two seasons of eligibility remaining at Texas A&M.

Grimes started 11 games for North Carolina this season, finishing tied for the team lead with seven pass breakups while recording 36 tackles and a forced fumble. According to Pro Football Focus, he allowed 23 receptions on 45 targets (51.1%). The 6-foot, 195-pound defender started a combined 28 games over the past three seasons for the Tar Heels.

Grimes should have the opportunity to start immediately for Texas A&M. The Aggies are losing three-year starter Jaylon Jones to the NFL while talented freshman cornerbacks Denver Harris, Smoke Bouie and Marquis Groves-Killebrew all entered the NCAA transfer portal along with sophomore Josh Moten and super seniors Myles Jones and Brian George.

Texas A&M returns a starting cornerback in sophomore Tyreek Chappell but has just one other returner at the position in sophomore Deuce Harmon. The Aggies signed a pair of defensive backs Wednesday, bringing in Rivals100 members Bravion Rogers and Jayvon Thomas.
