Washington State quarterback John Mateer intends to enter the transfer portal. According to a report from OUInsider.com, Mateer has informed the Cougars of his intention to transfer, and when he does officially enter, he is expected to have a "do not contact" tag by his name.
Oklahoma is the favorite to land Mateer. Former Washington State offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Ben Arbuckle was hired by the Sooners for the same role on Dec. 2. Mateer played under head coach Jake Dickert, Arbuckle and the Cougars from 2022 through 2024.
Mateer completed 224 out of 347 passes (65%) for 3,139 yards, 29 touchdowns and seven interceptions. He was also effective on the ground, rushing 178 times for 826 yards (4.6 yards per carry) and 15 additional scores.
He started all 12 games for the Cougars in 2024, and led Washington State to an 8-4 regular-season record. WSU will play Syracuse in the Holiday Bowl on Dec. 27. He played 798 snaps for the Cougars this season, and received an overall offensive grade of 81.7 by Pro Football Focus.
In 24 career games for Washington State, Mateer completed 239 out of 366 passing attempts (65%) for 3,406 yards, 32 touchdowns and eight picks.
He's rushed 203 times for 977 yards (4.8 yards per carry) and 18 touchdowns on the ground. Mateer has also recorded two receptions.
The 6-foot-1, 219-pound Mateer has two years of eligibility left.
He was a two-star prospect out of Little Elm High School in Texas in the class of 2022.

The winter college football transfer portal window is scheduled to open on Dec. 9, 2024 for 20 days. Additionally, players have a 30-day window to transfer when their head coach leaves. There is also a five-day window for players to transfer after their team has finished postseason play. A 10-day transfer window will open on April 16 as well.
