Auburn sophomore defensive end Amaris Williams had a spirited first recruitment in the class of 2024.
The 6-foot-2, 269-pound Williams played 120 snaps in 10 games this season, and had half a sack and seven tackles.
Williams went from being a sleeper to coveted recruit in record time at Clinton (N.C.) High. The previous staffs at West Virginia and North Carolina were his first P4 offers, but USC and NC State also jumped in early.
Ohio State, Penn State, Tennessee, Georgia, Oklahoma and Virginia Tech also offered, but he verbally committed early to Florida. The commitment from the Gators lasted June 17, 2023, until Dec. 20, 2023, and he flipped to Auburn.
Rivals.com ranked Williams the No. 69 overall player in the class of 2024, the No. 4 overall player in North Carolina and No. 6 strongside defensive end nationally.
Williams helped lead Clinton High to a runner-up finish in the NCHSAA 2A playoffs his senior year, falling to Reidsville (N.C.) High at Carter-Finley Stadium in Raleigh. Due to injuries, he emerged at running back for the Dark Horses.
Williams had 40 tackles, 20 tackles for loss, 11 sacks, 700-plus rushing yards and 12 rushing touchdowns. He also was a state finalist in the shot put 2023, tossing 51 feet, 11.25 inches.
